Established by Wilhelm Gutbrod in Germany, in the mid-1920s - and at the top end of the market – Standard subsequently purchased the Swiss firm of Zehender in 1930, thus providing two manufacturing bases within which where produced a variety of 4-stroke singles and twins, between 200 and 1000cc, using JAP or MAG engines. In the late 1930s they became responsible for their own ohc 500cc motor that exhaled via a pair of upswept 'question mark' exhausts. The chassis of the expensively priced Rex was unique inasmuch its long wheelbase frame employed a form of swing arm plunger suspension at the rear, plus Castle-type leading link forks at front!
